Briet, Philip: Roma Gentium Domina
Paris, 1640.
First edition of a rare historical map of the Roman Empire by Philip Briet, which Michael Van Lochum published as a separate sheet (the second, printed from a new plate, was published in 1687 without an imprint). In addition to European territories, the map field shows North Africa and the northwestern part of the Middle East. The engraver, Henri le Roy illustrated his work with a ship and a sea monster. He also placed two finely crafted, embellished cartouches on the map field, neither of which contains the title. The title field has a banner-style base, under which the cartographer’s dedication to Armand de Bourbon, Duke of Conti, can be read in the cartouche. The other, large cartouche surrounds the side map of the cradle of the Roman Empire (Imperium Romanum nasces).
Dimensions: 310 x 510 (405 x 530) mm. With a faint water stain on the lower right margin and on the upper right margin.
