The author, born in Pozsony, practised medicine in his hometown for a short time after receiving his medical degree. However, from 1735, he taught at the University of Göttingen and subsequently for a longer period at Halle. At the latter university, he founded the observatory and taught astronomy, in addition to physics and mathematics. His work was first published in 1746.
