Blaeu, Willem Janszoon – Blaeu, Joan: Ciprus Insula
Amsterdam, 1635.
A decorative copper-engraved regional map of Cyprus published by Willem Janszoon Blaeu and Joan Blaeu. The chart is based on a 1573 depiction by Abraham Ortelius. The engraving, serving as decoration for the beautiful baroque title cartouche, demonstrates the medieval vividness of Greek myths. The goddess of beauty is towed by a pair of swans pulling her shell towards Paphos, near which city she landed on the island (at Petra tou Romioun, named Aphrodite's Rock). The title field in the background, cast in shadow as a signpost, plays an almost secondary role in the image, yet even here, the goddess's sacred birds, the white doves, which remain symbols of love today appear. In the upper part of the map, the coats of arms of the vilayet of Cyprus, and the ruling house of the Kingdom of Cyprus, the Lusignan family. The depiction is also illustrated with vignettes of ships and two elegant compass roses. Our copy is a rare, early print with blank verso, sold as a separate sheet or as part of a composite atlas.
Dimensions: 380 x 500 (420 x 540) mm. Fine, clear copy.
van der Krogt II.: 8130:2., Koeman I.: Bl 210.
