Zatta, Antonio: Atlante novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni e scoperte. Fatte dai piu' celebri e piu' recenti geografi. Tomo I.
Venice, 1779. 2pl(s). (two-page frontispiece and engraved title page)+(10)+IX-XVI+(2)+3-50+(6)p.+70 coloured map(s).
The first volume of one of the 18th century’s most impressive and comprehensive atlases. It was prepared for the Italian revision (“Nuova Geografia”) of the geographical treatise “Erdebeschreibung” by Anton Friedrich Büsching. The 4-part series is Zatta’s most famous work, whose maps were engraved by Giuliano Zuliani and Giovanni Marco Pitteri. He paid close attention to presenting the latest discoveries of his time in his work – as specified in the title – so he was the first in Italy to publish the results of James Cook’s voyages among others. He displayed many newly discovered Pacific islands on his plates. His regional representation of New Zealand (“La Nouva Zelanda”) – with a cartouche decorated with a finely detailed Maori village – was one of the first published versions of Cook’s chart of New Zealand and certainly the most decorative of them.
After the star, the world and continent charts, our item continues with the representations of the territories of the European countries (Portugal, Spain, France, England and the Netherlands), but there are – as English colonies next to the maps of the British Isles – several regional maps of North America (Canada, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland, etc.). It also includes Zatta’s celebrated 12-sheet “Le Colonie Unite delle America Settentrie” (1778) – based on John Mitchell’s map of America – which is the first representation of America to refer to the newly independent territory as the United States. The fogl. IX plate is damaged, with some loss of the scaled frame. The first volume also includes the “Mar del Sud” page, which shows the latest discoveries in the Pacific between 1765 and 1769, commemorating Captain Cook’s accomplishments. The beautifully engraved ship shown in the illustration next to the cartouche is believed to be his ship, the Endeavour.
Contemporary vellum.
