Antal Szerb (1901-1945), writer. Collection related to his conversion to Christianity from Judaism.
Antal Szerb was born on 1 May 1901 in Budapest. His parents, Károly Szerb (original surname Stern) and Elza Herzfeld, belonged to the Jewish religious denomination. Father and son were baptized on 20 December 1907 in Budapest. Due to the so-called second Jewish law, Antal Szerb gathered his personal and family documents and approached the mayor of the capital to request a non-Jewish certificate. However, obtaining the necessary birth certificates and credible documents proved challenging, as he had to collect them from distant regions such as Baja, Sarkad, and Nagyvárad. Ultimately, the Administrative Court determined that the mayor of the capital must issue Antal Szerb a certificate of non-Jewishness, which the city's first official complied with on 2 January 1941.
This lot includes a set of copies of the collected papers, including personal and family documents, and also contains his Baptismal certificate. With the exception of two documents, all copies were authenticated by Szerb with his autograph signature. Considering the tragic outcome of the writer's fate, we can assert that our item is both a unique and poignant literary historical monument.
