Hondius, Jodocus (ifj.): Tabula Islandiae
Amsterdam, 1630.
Map of Iceland by Jodocus Hondius, Jr. The map is credited to Joris Carolus in its title, but the coastline seems to be derived from Ortelius, while the nomenclature is from Mercator. French text on the back. The cartographic importance of the sheet is proven by the fact that it appears in several atlas editions edited by Blaeu and Jansson. In addition to mountains and fjords, it also depicts the eruption of the Hekla volcano. The engraver used cartouches, compass roses, sea monsters, and a galley as illustrations. Our piece is one of the quite rare, early prints, which were sold as separate sheets or as part of composite atlases (the verso is blank).
Dimensions: 380 x 490 (390 x 500) mm. Repaired with a paper strip on the back side.
