Briet, Philippe – Lochom, Michel van: Palestinae Delineatio ad Geographiae Canones Revocata
Paris, 1641.
The first edition of the rare, copper-engraved map of the Holy Land and Jerusalem by Philippe Briet is based on a drawing by Christian Kruik van Adrichem. The engraver was Henri le Roy, and the publisher was Michel van Lochom. Later, Pierre Mariette published it under his imprint in the historical atlas “Parellela geographie veteris et novae”, which is a much more common edition. The largest of the four-part group, oriented east to west, shows Palestine in the New Testament era, divided – differently from the previous tradition – by the twelve tribes of Israel, with a bird’s-eye view of Jerusalem in the centre above. On the two side maps in the upper corners, the cartographer presented the territory of ancient Syria and the Exodus – the migration of the Jews from Egypt to the land of Canaan –, thereby bringing faith closer to science. The nomenclature of each map is extremely detailed and provides a wealth of geographical and topographical information, showcasing important biblical sites, including the camps of the Jewish migration and the crucifix on top of Golgotha. Our copy is an extremely rare first condition of the sheet, imprinted by Michel van Lochom, which was distributed as a separate sheet or as part of composite atlases.
Dimensions: 390 x 540 (415 x 550) mm. Clean, strong print with faint discolouration along the right edge, and a few small stains on the depiction of Jerusalem.
