Universalis Tabula Iuxta Ptolemaeum
First state of the Ptolemaic world (representing Europe, Africa and most parts of Asia) by Gerard Mercator. First published in the 1578 edition of Mercator’s „Tabulae geographicae Cl. Ptolemaei”. The engraving contains several strange and distorted depictions like the source of the Nile that is shown as two great lakes, the Indian Ocean enclosed by continents, a disproportionately delineated tiny India and a massive Sri Lanka (Taprobana) next to it. The engraver embellished the border of his work with 12 windheads and elegantly designed strapwork. Latin text on the back. Dimensions: 345 x 485 (410 x 550) mm. Fine, clear copy.
