Islandia.
The most spectacular map of Iceland by Abraham Ortelius (published in „Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”), and also the first, relatively accurate depiction of the island based on local sources. The representation includes several settlements, fjords, mountains and glaciers, even the erupting Hekla volcano with the following note: „Hekla, perpetually condemned to storms and snow, vomits stones under terrible noise.” The richly decorated cartouche at the top contains the title; the dedication and the bar scales are in at the two lower corners. The engraver illustrated the work with polar bears on floating icebergs, driftwood (as an important natural resource of the coastline) and several real (whales, walrus, manta ray) and legendary (sea cow, sea hog) creatures. The sea monsters are identified with letters as a key to the descriptions (in Latin) on the back.
Dimensions: 340 x 490 (455 x 570) mm. Fine, clear, coloured copy.
