Petőfi Sándor: A helység kalapácsa.
Budán, 1844. (Geibel Károly) Magyar Kir. Egyetem betűivel. 68+(4)p. First edition.
The author's first separately published work. A comic epic that parodies the popular genre of romance. Presumably, the tender of the Kisfaludy Society played a significant role in its birth. There is no record of the number of copies, but the price of the booklet was "36 pengő krajcár". One of the unique features of the publication is that, according to the remembering of Orlai Petrich Soma, Petőfi's friend, the cover drawings - missing in the case of our copy - were drawn by the author himself. Readers were not very enthusiastic about the publication either. This is also shown by the fact that distributors still had pieces of it years later, and Geibel himself offered them to customers as "supplements" to Petőfi's collected works published in 1847.
The value of our copy is enhanced by the inscription of its previous owner, Countess Gézáné Podmaniczky, according to which it was presented to her by Pál Gyulai, one of the most significant figures in the literary life of the time.
Contemporary cloth. Spine gilt.
Poss.: "Gyulai Páltól kaptam K.Kartalon 1888. Jun. Podmaniczky Gézáné".
