Orbis Typus Universalis Iuxta Hydrographorum Traditionem Exactissime Depicta. 1522. L.F.
One of the earliest, obtainable maps of the world to include the name America. The majority of Lorenz Fries’ maps were derived from Waldseemüller’s 1513 edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia, but this map is Fries’ entirely original work. The title section of the woodcut bears his initials and the date of its first issue, 1522. He used an unusual frame of banners, which includes the names of the winds, each looped with a coil of rope. Dimensions: 335 x 495 mm. Fine copy with slight toning along centrefold.
