Diefert Situs Orbis Hydrographorum ab eo quem Ptolomeus Posuit
Rare, issue of Lorenz Fries’ edition of Martin Waldseemüller’s 1513 world map. „One of the earliest world maps available to a collector, [which] is an unsophisticated but attractive rendering of what was generally known of the world at that time” (Shirley). Stunning combination of Ptolemaic and modern sources, but shows only the eastern parts of America and complemented with the depictions of five kings sitting on their thrones, representing Russia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka (Taprobana) and Mursuli. Near to the western coastline of Greenland is an image of an elephant – surprisingly realistic relative to the era – with its description. Latin text on the back. Dimensions: 280 x 460 (375 x 500) mm. Fine copy with slight toning along centrefold.
