Josef Heu was an Austrian-British sculptor, medalist, and painter. After attending the Graz School of Applied Arts, he studied at the Vienna Academy from 1893 to 1898 (1893/1894 guest student) with K. v. Zumbusch and E. Hellmer sculpture. Numerous works are in public spaces: “The Liberation of the Source” in the Vienna City Park (1902/1903), group of figures on the attic of the House of the Vienna Merchants in Vienna 1, Schwarzenbergplatz (1903), Statue of St. Johannes in the K. Lueger Memorial Church on the Wr. Central Cemetery, Young man figure “Dying Strength” in the Döblinger Cemetery in Vienna, Portrait relief of the Wolf grave in the Döbling cemetery (behind the arcades), Gable stele on the Austrian grave at the Döbling cemetery, “Young man with a goose” in Vienna Hietzing, Jenulgasse 9-13 (1930). From 1902 to 1909 he was a member of the Hagenbund (leaving with J. Urban and H. Lefler), and in 1913 he exhibited as a guest with the Hagenbund in the Vienna Künstlerhaus. From 1919 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, He was also a member of the Austrian Society for Christian Art and its president from 1930 to 1934. In 1938/1939 Heu emigrated to Ampleforth in England with his Jewish wife. There he led v. a. Commissioned works from monasteries and churches (mostly in wood), as well as watercolour paintings. Works included in the collections of WienMuseum, Joanneum Graz, Heeresgeschichtliches Museum Vienna. Honours, prizes (selection): 1919 Dumba Prize, 1922 Karl Ludwig Promotion Prize, 1929 Golden Medal of Honour from the Vienna Künstlerhaus, 1933 State Honorary Award, 1933 Large Gold Medal of Honour from the Vienna Künstlerhaus.
