Jansson, Jan: Turcicum Imperium
Amsterdam, 1636.
A decorative map of the Ottoman Empire by Jan Jansson, covering the entire Arabian Peninsula. Cartographically, it is based on Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s work of the same title, thus showing the area from the Black and Caspian Seas to the Gulf of Aden in a north-south direction, and from west to east between Sicily and the Gulf of Oman. Its nomenclature is rich, and it is a fairly accurate representation in terms of topography and cartography. Above the title field, a beautiful cartouche depicts the wise sultan himself (presumably Osman I, the founder of the empire) sitting on his throne, while there are allegorical figures on both sides holding weapons, representing Greece and Türkiye. At the bottom of the title cartouche is a Latin quote from the Roman historian, Sallust: “Concordia parvæ res crescunt, discordia maximæ dilabuntur”. The engraver decorated the sheet with vignettes of ships on the Mediterranean and the Arabian Sea, and the publisher’s name and a small bar scale are placed in the lower right corner. This piece is a rare, early copy with blank verso, and sold either as a separate sheet or part of a composite atlas. The more common copies with explanatory text were published as sheets of the “Atlas Novus” or the “Nouveau Théâtre du Monde”.
Dimensions: 410 x 520 (415 x 535) mm. Clear, strong print, cropped to the frame line of the map field at the right side of the upper edge of the sheet.
