Jansson, Jan: Insulae Balearides et Pytiusae
Amsterdam, 1634.
A map of the Balearic Islands by Jan Jansson, the first folio-sized depiction of the region in an atlas. In addition to the islands, the map field also shows the coasts of Valencia and Catalonia to the northeast. The engraver, Symons Hamersveldt, added two cartouches to the sheet: one of them is the title field, displayed in a ribbon-like manner, and the other is the scale, which he decorated with an elegant armillary sphere. The coat of arms of Philip II is located in the upper left corner, and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Mallorca is on the right. Two finely crafted compass roses (with rhumb lines emanating from them) as well as engraved vignettes of sea monsters and ships further illustrate the piece. Our lot is one of the early prints sold as individual sheets or as part of composite atlases, and the verso is blank.
Dimensions: 390 x 505 (405 x 520) mm. Clear, strong print with a small repair in the right margin.
van der Krogt I.: 1802.1.1., Koeman II.: Me 446.
