Graeciae Chorographia
Scarce, first state map of Greece by Francesco Salamanca, and it is the only confirmed work of the eminent Rome cartographer Antonio Salamanca’s son. Based on Nikolaos Sophianos’s most accurate 8-sheet map of the region. The engraver, Sebastiano di Ré relied not on the 1545 two-sheet Venetian edition by Giovanni Andrea Vavassore but – considering the delineation of Zakynthos’s western coast – on the 1552 work published by Antonio Blado in Rome. Salamanca’s sheet had been copied by several publishers: first Vincenzo Luchini in 1588, then Paolo Forlani, Ferrando Bertelli, Claudio Duchetti and Heinrich van Schoel. The map field is illustrated by galleons, the title can be read on the top, and the cartouche on the lower left side contains reference to Sophianos and the praise of the Greek culture and state. The engraver’s name (Sebastianus a Regibus Clodiensis) is written in the strapwork. In the last 20 years, the map had appeared only twice on auctions.
Dimensions: 420 x 625 (440 x 655) mm. Fine, clean copy.
