Mappe-monde Dressé sur les Observations…
World map by Guillaume de L'Isle depicting the continents on a double-hemisphere projection. Our item is the third state of the separately published sheet, which is one of the famous French cartographer's first works and illustrates his crisp, elegant style. The map is up to date for the period with the most recent explorations based on accounts from Tasman and Dampier or La Salle (and other French explorers and colonizers). The large, centred, finely decorated — by the French royal coat of arms and allegorical female representations of the four continents — upper cartouche is surrounding the title, and a floral frame contains the publisher imprint in the lower centre (the year is still 1700 — the date of the first issue —, but the address is "Quai de l'Horloge", to where de L'Isle moved in 1707). Dimensions: 430 x 660 (515 x 720) mm. Original outline colour. With several stains (mostly in the lower left part of the print), the upper corners of the sheet slightly damaged, the margin has some small holes.
