"Mit nem ismerünk, becsülni nem szoktuk." - Jelen munka honi nyelvünk, 's irodalmunk rövid történetét a' legrégiebb időtől kezdve jelenkorunkig, foglalja magában. - Eddig szerencsétlenségem volt szomoruan tapasztalni, miszerint fiatalságunk nem megvetendő része nemzeti nyelvünk rendszeres tanulásától azért idegenkedék, mert némelly külföldieskedők, irodalmunk szegénységéről szüntelen csevegvén, őt is elámíták. Ezen következményeiben igen szomorító tévedést megczáfolandó határozám el magamat jelen munkám sajtó alá bocsátani.”
