Az epigramma egyik legnevesebb művelője a jezsuitának indult, majd világi pappá vált Babai Ferenc (1742-78). Szerinte a műfaj a költészet lelke, mert az „argutiá”val játszó szellem leginkább ebben nyilatkozhatik meg (elménckedés), s a tudós emberek ezzel teszik nyájassá a társalgást. Műveinek egyik csoportjában (két tételünk) epigrammákba foglalta a rendi ország legfőbb vezetőit: a királyokat, a nádorokat és az esztergomi érsekeket.
