Tassin, Christophe Nicolas: Seigneurie de Genes…
Paris, 1634.
An elegant, copper-engraved map of the coast of Provence and Liguria, between Saint-Tropez and La Spezia, with the northern part of Corsica. It was created by Christophe Tassin (also known as Nicolas Tassin), who worked as an engineer and geographer to the king (Ingenieur et Geographe du Roy) until 1631, then settled in Paris, where he produced a number of regional maps as an engraver. This depiction was published as part of the atlas “Carte générale de toutes les costes de France” in 1634. He decorated its cartouche with the coat of arms of Nice, the eagle, and placed several ships, a large compass rose, and a sea monster on the Ligurian Sea as illustrations. Our copy is an early print with empty verso, sold as a separate sheet or as part of a composite atlas.
Dimensions: 370 x 515 (420 x 540) mm. Slightly toned copy, with water stains in the upper right corner (which affects the map field), at the bottom and the left side (these are limited to the margin).
