Map of Africa, which was published in the first edition of Gerard de Jode's "Speculum Orbis Terrae". Based on the 1564 map of Giacomo Gastaldi. The chart is beautifully decorated by the engravers, Jan and Lucas van Deutecum. A richly detailed cartouche, a compass rose (with labelled winds and directions), several galleons and aquatic animals as well as an elephant are depicted. Latin text and plate number (III) on the back. This is the second state of the map, with "Cum privilegio" line in the cartouche. Dimensions: 345 x 485 (420 x 565) mm. Fine, clean copy.
