William Henry Seward (1801-1872) New York állam kormányzója, amerikai szenátor. Az orosz intervenció elleni felszólalása a szenátusban (példányunk) is szenátori minőségében történt. 1861-69 között az USA államtitkára, Elkötelezett ellenzője a rabszolgaságnak, meghatározó alakja a Republikánus Pártnak. Republikánus elnöki jelöléséből visszalép Lincoln javára, kampányol Lincoln mellet, aki győzelme után államtitkárrá nevezi ki.
