Norman ​Manea az egyik legismertebb kortárs román író. 1936-ban született, gyerekként került a transzinisztriai koncentrációs táborba, ahonnan 1945-ben szabadult. Hidrotechnikai mérnökként dolgozik, azonban 1974 után csak az írásnak él. Hazájában, disszidálása előtt, tíz könyve jelent meg, a Securitate állandó zaklatása miatt disszidál, 1986 óta az Egyesült Államokban él. Az 1989-es fordulat után szinte végleg hazaköltözik, de hazáját ezt követően, a demokrácia éveiben is, több alkalommal kénytelen „véglegesen elhagyni". "
