Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) jeles könyvkiadó, ő alapította a Bibliográfiai Intézetet Gothában. Meyer's Universum mellett az általa kiadott Grosse Konversations-Lexikon is az ő nevéhez fűződik. A Meyer's Universum kötetei Földünk leglátványosabb és legérdekesebb természeti és művészeti csodáit írja le Amerikától Afrikáig, Európától Ázsiáig. A leírásokat művészi acélmetszet-illusztrációk díszítik. Az első kötet jelesebb metszetei: Barcelona, Konstantinápoly, London, Lindau, Lübeck, München, Nápoly, Párizs, Prága, Pola, Wartburg, Weimar, Zürich… Az acélmetszetek hártyapapírral védve, helyenként kisebb rozsdafolttal.
Korabeli, aranyozott gerincű félbőr-kötésben, jó állapotban.
