Only the author's name appears on the title page of the rare Aldina. In addition to the Pharsalia, the work also contains a short biography of Lucanus.
The learned humanist, Aldus Manutius founded his printing house in Venice in 1495 to print and widely distribute the works of the ancient classics with flawless text, which were mainly spread in manuscript form until then. To this end, he gathered the best scientists from Italy and Europe around himself. In addition to the precise text, he emphasised the beautiful execution of his prints according to the Renaissance taste. The first humanistic antiqua and the cursive type were created for him by Francesco Griffo. However, his real cultural innovation was that, instead of the large, heavy wooden-board books typical of the age of printing, he published his publications in hand-held, portable, easy-to-use octavo format, thus revolutionizing book publishing and reading habits. After he died in 1515, his father-in-law, and then his son, Paulus continued to manage the workshop at a standard worthy of the founder. The printing house's publications are usually decorated with his famous printer's insignia: a dolphin wrapped around an anchor.
