Liszt Ferenc virtuóz éveit két, pokoli nehézségű darabokat tartalmazó gyűjteménye szimbolizálja: a hat "Paganini" etűdről és a tizenkét transzcendentális etűdről van szó. Az eredeti sorozatok a következő címekkel jelentek meg: Etudes d'exécution transcendante d'après Paganini és Grandes études. 1851-ben átdolgozta őket, és a következő címeket adta ba sorozatoknak: Grandes études de Paganini és Etudes d'exécution transcendante. Míg az elsőt Clara Schumannak, a másodikat első professzionális tanárának, Carl Czernynek ajánlotta. Árverésünkön az utóbbi (átdolgozott verzió) korai kiadása szerepel.
