Kertész Imre 2002-ben Nobel-díjat nyert regényének első kiadása. A könyv a Kádár-korszak példányszámaihoz képest meglepően kis példányszámban készült. A korabeli kritika rétegolvasmánynak könyvelte el, de ennek ellenére (Spiró György közlése szerint) 1983-ban már antikváriumok keresett hiánycikkének számított.
Kiadói kartonkötésben, Engel Tevan István grafikájával illusztrált papír védőborítóban.
