Jansson, Jan: Insulae Americanae in Oceano Septentrionali cum Terris adiacentibus
Amsterdam, 1635.
Rare map of Central America by Jan Jansson based on Hessel Gerritsz. Jansson’s edition is almost identical to Gerritsz’s chart, but Jansson added the west coast of Central America to the depiction. The mouth of the Mississippi River is also shown (marked “R. do Spirito Santo”). The coastline of Central America is remarkably accurate, and the Yucatán is correctly depicted. The engraver illustrated the work with cartouches, galleys, and compass roses placed inland, decorated with putti, animals, and plant ornaments. The piece is scarce because of its blank verso. Due to the lack of explanatory text, it was presumably distributed as a separate sheet or as part of a composite atlas.
