A szerző (1769-1859) a legjelesebb és a legbátrabb botanikus-felfedező volt. Számos más hegy mellett a Chimborazo ecuadori vulkán sem jelentett számára akadályt. Humboldt és Bonpland 5877 méterig jutottak, ám az oxigénhiány és a vele járó hegyibetegség itt visszafordulásra késztette őket, a mászásukkal azonban 30 éven keresztül világrekorderek maradtak. Ha a Föld középpontjától mérjük a „magasságot”, akkor a Chimborazo a legmagasabb hegyünk (6384,4 méter, ez 2,1 méterrel több, mint a Mt. Everest távolsága).
Az eredeti, vaknyomásos kötéstáblák felhasználával készített modern, bordázott félbőr-kötésben, címkével. A kőnyomat foltos, a címlapon kisatírozott és egy újabb névbeírás. Számos helyen ceruzás beírásokkal.
