Hondius, Jodocus id. – Jansson, Jan: Asia recens summa cura delineata
Antwerpen, 1632.
A spectacular, copper-engraved “carte-a-figures” map of Asia (see lot 145) created by Jodocus Hondius based on his own work published only four years earlier in 1619, and cartographically based on Blaeu’s folios. The ornate baroque frame decoration around the map field shows six cityscapes at the top and bottom, and five at the sides depicting the traditional costumes of Asian ethnic groups, however – since our item was presumably bound in a composite atlas –, the protruding part of the engraving was folded in on the right side, and the torn strip along the fold line was destroyed (as a result, the rightmost cityscapes were also damaged). The engraver was presumably Pieter van den Keere in this case as well, to whose name the depictions of other continents created at the same time can be also linked. He used a mirror image of the engraving vignettes – that decorated the map field in the previous version – to depict the figures wearing traditional clothes and the cartouche of the title field, and he placed the imprint in a new, cleaner cartouche in the upper right part of the map field. Our copy is the second state of the engraving, known in five states, and the name of Jan Jansson is indicated as the publisher.
Dimensions: 455 x 520 (475 x 525) mm. Unprofessionally restored copy. The decorative border strip on the right is missing.
van der Krogt I.: 8000:1C:2., Koeman II.: Me 169., Schilder VI.: 23.3.
