Bécsben és Münchenben folytatott művészettörténeti stúdiumok után 1892-től Hollósy Simon magániskoláját látogatta, 1893-tól a Julian Akadémián képezte magát. 1895-ben rövid időre visszatért Münchenbe, 1896-tól már Nagybányán, az Izvorán festett. A MIÉNK törzstagja volt, s részt vett a Szinyei Társaság alapításában. 1914-1938 között a Képzőművészeti Főiskolán tanított.
