Friedrich Theodor Max Fritz Hofmann (from 1906 he called himself Max Hofmann-Juan) was a German artist. He studied at the Art Academy in Dresden and from around 1895 in Paris at the Académie Julian. His teachers in Dresden included Leon Pohle and Ferdinand Pauwels as well as Leonhard Gey and Julius Scholtz. After his return from France in 1910 he became a member and for a time secretary of the Munich artists' group Sema. As a result of his stay in France Hofmann-Juan stylistically oriented towards French Impressionism. One of his major works from this creative phase is the 81 cm high and 66 cm wide oil painting "Frauenraub" (ca. 1920). Around the same time Hofmann-Juan created several pictures of the Sun Temple at Baalbek, one of which he exhibited in Munich in 1911. In 1915 one of his works was particularly praised in the 1914 annual exhibition at the Glaspalast in Munich. Hofmann-Juan later lived in Dresden, where he came into contact with the Jacob Böhme League. A trip to India in 1927 inspired him profoundly. In the 1930s, he shifted from a rather explosive Expressionism to a classical rigor reminiscent of Spanish works of the 17th and 18th centuries. His painting "The Party on the Grass" (1922), inspired by Édouard Manet's "Luncheon on the Grass," caused a scandal. Among the painter's latest works is a portrait of the artist Irena Rüther-Rabinowicz, a lifelong friend of his. Further artists and styles: Impressionism, antiquity, Asia, genre painting, genre scenes, portrait, oil painting, lithography, chalk
