Ferdinand Michl was a Czechoslovaki-Austrian painter and graphic artist who was active primarily around the turn of the century and in the interwar period. He studied at the Prague Academy with Maximilian Pirner and Franz Thiele and in Munich with Ludwig Herterich. After extensive study trips through Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany, he lived in Paris for five years and settled in Vienna in 1909. From 1905 to 1922, he was a member of the Hagenbund and from 1924 a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. A trip through Manchuria, China, India and Japan had a lasting impact on his work. He created numerous depictions with landscape motifs from Asia but also figural scenes from markets and Asian traditions.
