Festészeti tanulmányait 1884-ben kezdte a Mintarajziskolában, ezt követően Weimarba, majd a párizsi Julian Akadémiára ment. 1892-től két éven keresztül Weimarban dolgozott, majd Benczúr Gyula mesteriskolájába került. 1898-tól művészete szorosan összefonódott Szolnokkal, hiszen a művésztelep alapítóinak egyike volt. Nemcsak a szolnoki hagyomány megteremtésében, hanem a nyaranta odalátogató főiskolás növendékek oktatásában is meghatározó szerepet játszott. Rendszeresen látogatta a Japán kávéház művészasztalát, a Szinyei Társaság alapítói közé tartozott.
