A Kelet népe” megjelenése vihart kavart a hazai közéletben. Széchenyi támadta Kossuthot és a Pesti Hírlapot annak radikalizmusa miatt. Kossuth és elvbarátai visszavágtak, ezért írta meg Széchenyi a „Garat”-ot. Végül úgy döntött, hogy nem jelenteti meg.
