An early memory of the first domestic commercial bank, the Hungarian Commercial Bank (the predecessor of MKB Bank). István Széchenyi and Palatine József also participated in its foundation. They applied for a license in 1830, but it was not able to start operating until 1840. Its first director was Móric Ulmann. It played a pioneering role in boosting the Hungarian economy, and during the War of Independence, it became an indispensable player in ensuring the financial background. Miraculously, it survived the subsequent reprisals and even the attack by the Austrian National Bank to close it in 1850. The enormous development following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise would have been unimaginable without the institution.
