De Jode, Gerard: Asia, partium orbis maxima.
Antwerpen, 1593.
Rare map of Asia by Gerard de Jode, published in the second edition of de Jode’s “Speculum Orbis Terrae”. De Jode considered Giacomo Gastaldi’s map as the basis and significantly improved his 1573 map of Asia, especially in the Southeast Asian, Chinese, and Philippine regions. Several cartographical irregularities can be observed, such as the unusual coastlines of Japan and the absence of Korea. The nomenclature is detailed – considering the possibilities available at the time – and the lack of geographical information is covered by illustrations, topographical elements and larger fonts. The title cartouche at the top is delicately decorated on both sides with strapwork and two busts. The engraver embellished the depiction with several mythical creatures, galleons, scenes from the life of the natives, and the Great Wall of China. Latin text on verso.
Dimensions: 370 x 460 (400 x 510) mm. Clear, strong print, restored at the upper part along the centrefold.
van der Krogt III.: 8000:32B., Koeman II.: Jod2 6., Suárez: 165. old.
