A L'Illustration, az első francia képes újság 1843-ban jelent meg először, és több mint 150 országban terjesztették. A heti magazin rendszeresen megjelenő különszámai közül a l'Automobile (1921-1941 és 1946-1955) számai, valamint a karácsonyi és a repülési kiadások a legnépszerűbbek a gyűjtők körében. Bár a L'Illustration korábban is sok hirdetési és szöveges oldalt szentelt az autóknak, de az autókról szóló részletes műszaki leírásokat is tartalmazó különszám először 1921. október 8-án jelent meg.
