Сф’нта ши д’мнезеяска a луи Ι(ΗΣΟΥ)Σ Χ(ΡΙΣΤΟ)Σ Ева’геліе (Sfí[n]ta si d[u]mnezeiasca... eva[n]ghelie...)
Blazs, 1776. Tip. M[anastirei]. Bunei Vestiri, Petru Popovici Rimniceanul. (8)+344 [recte 352]p.
The Romanian-language New Testament was first published in Balázsfalva in 1765, and this is its second edition.
Balázsfalva was the centre of Romanian-language book publishing in Transylvania in the 18th century. The font set of the princely workshop in Gyulafehérvár was used, and operation began during the time of Inochentie Micu. Its golden age was marked by the bishopric of Petru Pavel Aaron. Many printers came from Moldavia and Wallachia. Perhaps the most famous of the latter was Petru Popovici, to whom this publication is also linked. On the title page of the ornate print, the text is decorated with a woodcut frame. God is shown in the top centre, Peter and Paul apostles on both sides below, and Mary and Gabriel archangels at the bottom. The artist placed the attributes of the evangelists in the four corners. Even though Romanian-language book publishing flourished in Transylvania from the 16th century, similar pieces rarely appear.
Restored, contemporary leather with clasps.
