Cetto, (Benedek) Benedictus: Sinensium imposturae assertae
Pesthini, 1787. Typis Mathiae Trattner. XVI+554+(3)+1 folding pl(s).
Part of the famous debate between the Jesuits and the Piarists. The polemic began between Ince Desericzky and György Pray. Initially, it was about prehistoric issues, but later it broadened into a theological and source-critical debate. The Piarist Cetto attacked Pray, arguing for Desericzky. The specific subject of this work is the authenticity of the Chinese annals published by the French Deguignes, and the so-called ritual debate about the customs of the Chinese. In 1781, Pray published “Imposturae CCXVIII in Dissertatione RP Benedicti Cetto ...”, which attacked the Piarist, to which he responds here. The international significance of the volume lies in the fact that, in addition to the arguments, Cetto also presents Chinese society and customs and provides a small insight into the history of science and philosophy there. The work is also considered in the universal history of sinology (see Walravens: China Illustrata. Das europäische Chinaverständnis im Spiegel des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts. Ausstellungskataloge der Herzog August Bibliothek. Wolfenbüttel, 1987: item 134).
