Britania Insula Quae Duo Regna Continet Angliam et Scotiam cum Hibernia Adiacente
Rare depiction of the British Isles. The engraver of the separately issued map was Paolo Forlani, the prominent member of the Lafreri School of mapmakers. Based on the 1546 work of Georg Lily, who followed his master, Cardinal Reginald Pole into self-imposed exile. Lily’s cartography relied on Münster for the outline of England and Wales, but it was the first to show Scotland’s coastline and islands in their original form (possibly drawing on John Elden and Hector Boece for the Scottish detail). The nomenclature had also been improved. The finely detailed parts are in stark contrast to the simple portrayal of Ireland. As opposed to the Lily version, Forlani used north-south position. The title is located on the top of the map field, and in simple boxes, on both sides, the description of the areas can be found, one dated 1561 and the other 1562. The copy is very rare as it has been only a few times on auction in the last 40 years.
Dimensions: 490 x 355 mm. Fine, clear copy with narrow margins (no margin at the right side).
