A lithográfiák (A Bauer of the Puszta, Buda. Pest /from Paget/, Village and peasants, Farm-Team on the Puszta, Csikos, or Cattle driver of the Puszta) barnafoltosak.
Charles Loring Brace (1826-1890) a Yale egyetem (1846) után latint tanít, majd a New York Times újságírója. 1851-ben Európába utazik, hogy a kísérleti szociális programok helyzetét tanulmányozza. Míg Magyarországon tartózkodott, kémnek nézték s 1851. május 23-án, Nagyváradon néhány hétre letartoztatták "bizonyított forradalmi tevékenységért". Miután visszatért New Yorkba, két könyvet s számtalan cikket jelentetett meg szociális, elsősorban a gyermekek helyzetét érintő tapasztalatairól. Fogságáról s magyarországi élményeiről fenti könyvében számol be. Munkája az első Magyarországról szóló részletes útleírás, melyet amerikai szerző jelentetett meg az Egyesült Államokban.
