Padányí Biró Márton (1693-1762) az ellenreformáció szellemi igényeire szabott, nagyformátumú barokk főpapi egyéniség volt. Pázmány nyomdokain járva, fanatikus hittel harcolt a török hódoltság utáni országban már-már teljesen elvesztett katolikus vallás megerősítéséért, újraszervezéséért. Veszprémi püspökként sokat tett egyházmegyéje és különösen Sümeg városának felvirágoztatásáért. Padányi Bíró protestánsellenes könyve nagy visszatetszést szült nemcsak idehaza, de a protestáns Poroszországban is, különösen a porosz udvari körökben. II. Frigyes a boroszlói püspökön keresztül a pápa közbenjárását kérte, hogy a magyar püspökök hagyjanak föl a protestánsok üldözésével. A pápa föllépésének az lett az eredménye, hogy Mária Terézia betiltotta a művet. Korabeli papírkötésben.
