Asia, partium orbis maxima.
Rare map of Asia by Gerard de Jode published in the second edition of de Jode’s „Speculum Orbis Terrae”. De Jode considered Giacomo Gastaldi’s map as the basis and significantly improved his 1573 map of Asia (especially the Southeast Asian, Chinese and the Philippine region). Several cartographical irregularities can be found such as the strange coastline of Japan and the missing Korea. The nomenclature is detailed – considering the possibilities available at the time – and the lack of geographical information is covered by illustrations, topographic elements and larger fonts. The title cartouche at the top is delicately decorated on the two sides with strapwork and two heads. The engraver embellished the depiction with several mythical creatures, galleons, scenes from the life of the natives and the Great Wall of China. Latin text on the back.
Dimensions: 375 x 470 (405 x 570) mm. Fine, clear copy.
