Az emblemata alapja egy allegorikus kép, amelyhez lemma, motto vagy inspiratio elnevezéssel egy képcím járult. A kép alatt pedig vers fejtette ki a kép értelmét, adott kulcsot a képcím megértéséhez és vont le mindezekből bölcs tanulságokat. E műfaj alkotásaiból összeállított könyv kapta a görögös többes számnak megfelelően az emblemata nevet.
A három rész együtt, korabeli, dúsan aranyozott gerincű egészbőr-kötésben, címkékkel és pirosra festett lapszélekkel. Apróbb kopásokkal, előzéken névbeírással, jó példány.
