Anton Josef Trcka was born in Vienna as the son of a Czech general merchandiser. He was sent to elementary school in Jaispitz, Moravia, his mother's hometown, and remained bilingual throughout his life. From 1911 to 1915, Trcka studied at the Graphic Teaching and Research Institute in Vienna, supported by Karel Novák, who advocated openness to all artistic disciplines. Trcka worked in different areas and techniques throughout his life. In 1911 he exhibited as a painter together with Egon Schiele in the “Neukunstgruppe”. From 1912 to 1914 he created a series of portrait photographs of Austrian artists (Schiele, Klimt, Altenberg, Andersen, Fuchs, etc.), with whom he maintained close contact. From 1915 Trcka was a convinced anthroposophist. In 1916 he joined the army. In Moravia, Anna Pamrová introduced him to Otokar Brezina and neo-Romantic Czech modernism. In 1918, Trcka became financially independent from his father by marrying the wealthy anthroposophist Clara Schlesinger. The encounter with Vlatislav Hofmann from the painting group “Die Unentwegten” enabled the temporary Czech military photographer to take part in exhibitions in Prague in 1923 and at the Hagenbund in Vienna in 1924. After separating from his wife, Trcka returned to photography and created portraits of the dancers Hilde Holger and Ellinor Tordis. In the 1930s he tried his hand at being a journalist. Shortly before his death from gas poisoning, Trcka was summoned by the police. His apartment with his estate was destroyed by an aerial bomb in 1944. Further artists and styles: Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Trude Fleischmann, Rudolf Koppitz, Karel Novák, Hella Katz, Richard Teschner, Peter Altenberg, Ellinor Tordis, Symbolism, Expressionism, Portrait, Art Nouveau, Vienna modernism, Czech modernism, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Wiener Werkstätte, Martin
