The author was a Dutch (Walloon) physician, botanist, and the first exponent of Spanish and Hungarian flora. From 1573 to 1587, he worked as an inspector of the imperial gardens in Vienna, where he met János Zsámboky, Miklós Istvánffy, and the first Hungarian patron of botany, Batthyány Boldizsár. He was a frequent guest at his Németújvár court between 1574 and 1582. Together with István Beythe, the lord's court chaplain – both enthusiastic amateur botanists – he also accompanied Clusius on his herbology study trips, and both even helped him in his work.
The item is the first significant botanical work of Hungarian relevance that can be considered scientific. The work contains descriptions of nearly 500 domestic plants from Western Hungary and Austria, illustrated with around 350 mostly full-page woodcuts. In addition to the academic text, the accuracy of the drawings is also outstanding. The „Nomenclator", published with a separate title page, is the first Latin-Hungarian plant dictionary.
