Révay Miklós (1645–1708) magyar humanista, író és matematikus, aki az akkori tudományos világban is ismert volt. Művében a szög harmadolására és a kör négyszögletesítésére próbált új megoldásokat találni, amelyek már az ókori görög matematika idejében is nagy érdeklődést váltottak ki. A két geometriai probléma már az antik geometriában megfogalmazott problémák közé tartozik, a csupán vonalzóval és körzővel történő szerkesztés, amiről később bebizonyosodott, hogy ezek megoldhatatlanok.
Révay ezekre a klasszikus problémákra adott megoldási javaslatait és következményeit („consectaria”) vizsgálta és írta le, ami jól mutatja a matematikusok 17-18. századi kitartását és kreativitását e kihívások kezelésében.
