Korabeli gerincén bordázott, címkével ellátott egészbőr kötésben, körben festett lapszélekkel. Sir Francis Bacon (1561- 1626) angol filozófus, államférfi. A filozófiát új alapokra kívánta helyezni. Új, természettudományos módszerrel új, empirikus-induktív filozófiát kívánt művelni, amivel a materializmus egyik korai képviselője lett. Bacon szerint magából a természetből kell kiindulni, nem abból, amit eddig a természetről mondtak. A tudomány méltósága és fejlődése című ezen műve először 1623-ban jelent meg.
